Team ‘Merican Express March 2023 EBC Recap

In one word, wow.

My first trip to Everest was during the Pandemic. The mountain range had ~20 trekkers at that time vs. the thousands that descend during a traditional season. I never expected coming back to lead expeditions to base camp but here we are today, and a once far fetched dream has become reality. .

Team ‘Merican Express came together in March of 2023 to conquer the region’s three passes and despite not ‘finishing’ the fixed itinerary, the majority of the squad made it to base camp.

In the process, a team that started as strangers became lifelong friends. And what we shared on the mountainside will always be fondly remembered.

Many folks forget how difficult altitude can be in the mountains. And unlike other Nepali trekking regions, it plays a big factor in the experience in Everest. Case in point, on the Annapurna Circuit, only one night is spent above 4000m vs. five  in an EBC trek, with one night above 5000m! The three pass experience is even more challenging from altitude standpoint! Even the most experienced trekkers and athletes can fall victim to these challenges.

In our experience, we estimate that almost 100% of trekkers have a reaction to the altitude , however symptoms can be mild, like inability to sleep vs. major ones like headaches, shortness of breath etc.

Our first objective as an organization is safety getting our community up and down the mountain without any injuries or accidents. Our group of guides, like most other Sherpas in Nepal, are here to not only map the trails but also to constantly assess the physical condition of the community and ensure everyone is capable of climbing higher.

On this expedition, our clients reached Chukang village before Kangrala Pass and decided as a team, based on safety issues related to altitude sickness, decided to divert its course. Instead of crossing over the high pass, we took the low route, back to Dingboche and up to Lombuche. And one member of the trekking party, who experienced tougher symptoms, diverted with our assistent guide Taliman down the mountain to Pangboche (3700m).

We then altered the itinerary to include a stop in Thame Village before returning to Lukla. Funny because this village, known for the number of Sherpas who’ve submitted Everest, became the favorite attraction of the trip!

Jubalance and Joy could be the best descriptors of the feelings we shared as a team –  pictured above toasting its completion. And we are already planning the next adventure!

Thank you to our amazing community – George, Sam & Sage and of course Sudip and Taliman, our guides on this expedition. Can’t wait to get team ‘Merican Express back on the slopes!
